History
The Crime Stoppers has become synonymous internationally as a tool in crime prevention and resolution. The program evolved from the tragic murder of a young gas station attendant in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1976.
19-year-old Michael Carmen was working the midnight shift at a gas bar when he was robbed of cash and cigarettes. Two armed suspects then shot Michael at close range as they fled the scene. Greg MacAleese, a Canadian-born detective, was called in to investigate. The crime occurred on a busy street, he knew that there had to be many witnesses to the crime and yet, no one would come forward.
After months of investigating with no leads, MacAleese approached a local television station to re-enact the crime and ask for the public’s help. A reward was offered and a tips telephone line was set up. Callers were promised anonymity - they would not have to identify themselves or testify in court. The show was called Crime Stoppers. Within hours of airing, the case was solved and life was given to the Crime Stoppers program. Today, there are hundred’s of recognized programs around the world.
Crime Stoppers has joined forces with numerous organizations to combat crimes such as horse race doping, internet luring, weapons and human smuggling, and terrorism.
